There’s a Korean word for a relationship that feels like a trap—one you want to escape, but can’t: ak-yeon, or “ill-fated bond.”
Netflix’s crime thriller Karma (original title 악연) dives deep into these inescapable connections through six individuals whose lives become intertwined in a spiral of consequences.
One incident sparks six different desires, shattering six lives and giving birth to six karmic bonds. A single misguided decision ruins someone’s life, pushing another toward villainy.
Directed by Lee Il-hyung and starring Park Hae-soo, Shin Min-a, Lee Hee-jun, Kim Sung-kyun, Lee Kwang-soo, and Gong Seung-yeon, Karma follows six characters caught in the aftermath of a shared event. Each falls into a cycle of desperation, driven by desire, and ultimately bound by a karma they can neither control nor escape.
A Tight, Interwoven Narrative
Karma unfolds with a tightly crafted structure, linking six character arcs that reflect the intricate relationships formed through choice, coincidence, and consequence.
In Episode 1, Lee Hee-jun plays a loan shark drowning in debt. With death looming if he doesn’t pay within a month, he stumbles upon his father’s life insurance certificate and makes a chilling decision—he hires a hitman to kill his own father.
Kim Sung-kyun plays Gil-ryong, a warehouse worker recently laid off. Needing money to support his child, he accepts the dangerous offer and steps into the show’s web of karma.
Lee Kwang-soo plays a traditional doctor known as “Glasses Guy,” who seems to have it all—until a car accident involving his girlfriend, Yu-jung (Gong Seung-yeon), changes everything. As they try to cover up the crime, they fall deeper into a pit of guilt and fear.
Park Hae-soo portrays a “Witness,” an ordinary man who accidentally sees something he shouldn’t. When he’s offered money to keep quiet, he accepts—but soon, he’s dragged into chaos he can’t control.
Shin Min-a brings emotional depth to Ju-yeon, a surgeon battling unresolved trauma. When she comes face-to-face with someone from her past, her tightly held emotions unravel, revealing another layer of karmic entanglement.
Karma in Omnibus Form
While Karma uses an omnibus-style structure, it doesn’t follow the traditional formula. Each episode seamlessly connects through its central characters, creating one cohesive, escalating narrative rather than standalone stories.
The murder-for-hire plot that opens the series serves as a catalyst, triggering a chain reaction of events shaped by each character’s desires. The writing skillfully blends urgency, emotion, and realism, maintaining tension while offering layered insight into human nature.
These karmic bonds may feel like fate or chance, but each development is grounded in convincing logic and emotional truth. The result is a story that captivates while leaving room for contemplation.
At the March 31 press conference, actor Kim Sung-kyun remarked, “Gil-ryong is a father and a protector to his family, but a villain to someone else. It made me think about how good and evil aren't clearly divided.” That thought lingers well beyond the show’s ending.
Transformative Performances
Karma is a showcase of actors stepping outside their usual lanes to reveal striking new sides of themselves.
Gong Seung-yeon, often cast in innocent and delicate roles, surprises with her portrayal of Yu-jung—a woman complicit in crime, caught in moral ambiguity. Her performance broadens her range and hints at a bold new phase in her career.
Lee Kwang-soo is another standout. Best known for comedic roles, he transforms into a layered, serious figure. Holding his own alongside veterans like Park Hae-soo and Lee Hee-jun, he proves his strength as a dramatic actor.
Special appearances by Jo Jin-woong and Kim Nam-gil add weight to the series. Their brief but powerful roles enhance the show’s atmosphere and emotional impact, raising the stakes at crucial moments.
A Lasting Impression
Karma begins with a spark and erupts into a blaze that consumes six separate lives. It's a story of moral compromise, emotional complexity, and the invisible forces that bind people together—whether they want it or not.
Through tightly interlaced narratives and richly drawn characters, Karma doesn’t just explore the consequences of human choice—it embodies them. It’s a series that lingers in the mind long after the credits roll, its themes echoing with uncomfortable truth.
